How Often Should You Clean Your Driveway or Patio?
It's a fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends on your surface, your surroundings and how much you care about it looking sharp year-round. Here's a realistic guide rather than a one-size-fits-all number.
The general rule
For most homes, a full professional clean once a year keeps driveways and patios looking their best. Many people time it for spring, clearing off the grime and algae that built up over a damp winter so everything looks fresh for summer.
If your property is more exposed, you may want a lighter maintenance clean twice a year.
What makes yours need it more often
Some situations speed up how quickly a surface gets dirty:
- Shade and damp. North-facing areas and spots under trees stay wet, which is exactly what algae and moss love.
- Overhanging trees. Leaf fall, sap and bird activity all accelerate staining.
- Heavy use. A driveway with cars coming and going, oil drips and foot traffic dirties faster than a quiet patio.
- Surface type. Textured or porous surfaces trap dirt more readily than smooth sealed ones.
Why regular cleaning is the easier path
It's tempting to leave it for years, but that usually means a much bigger job in the end. Ingrained algae, lichen and set-in oil stains are far harder to remove than regular light grime. A surface that's maintained annually stays in the "quick clean" category; one left for five years often needs intensive treatment or even restoration.
Sealing after a clean (particularly on block paving) extends the interval further, because it stops dirt and weeds getting a foothold in the joints.
The easy option
Rather than trying to remember, some of our customers set up a simple annual visit — we come at the same time each year and keep everything looking maintained without them having to think about it. If that appeals, just ask and we'll sort it.
